Debbie, I'm a sales rep for a local
advertising agency and I'm frustrated by not being able to get passed "the
gatekeeper" of the offices I call on. I've stopped by as many as a dozen times
and still cannot get an appointment with the decision maker. What can
I do to get face to face meetings with "the boss"?
Stop "selling" and start giving!
The office personnel knows that when you walk in the door you want to sell
advertising. Her boss is paying her to keep you at bay. Start
popping by with gifts. Simple, inexpensive items of value that mean
more than they cost, like:
Bring in your calendars, promo gifts, logo mugs filled with
candy or mints. Just drop them off.
Don't sell.
Drop off a box of donuts, with a
business card attached. Be sure and not ask for a thing, even
an appointment.
Drop off some 2 cent stamp packages
for those last few stamps on the roll of .39 cent stamps, enclose a note
that says "I know how busy you are so I picked these up for you.
I hope it saves you some time. By the way, I'd like to meet with you about advertising soon.........
Stop selling and start building
relationships. People will buy from people they like. It's easy
to say "no" to a salesman. It's hard to say "no"
to someone you like and only wants one "10
minute appointment"!
Debbie, when I get up in front of a
BNI or Chamber group I freeze. My one-minute elevator commercial
always seems to plummet to the ground. What can I do?
First, write out your USP
(unique selling position) and then carefully develop pithy words and
phrases that will help people see how you can meet their need,
eliminate their pain, or deliver more joy to their
life. Notice words I've repeated? Notice what word I did
not use? my. People won't buy based on your
needs. They buy based on their own.
If you have have a
business question or marketing dilemma, email me and I'll post your answer
here! debbie@themaidcoach.com
